Faetal Writes In The Hot Rock Livejournal:
I read an article once where the girls were saying that their Portland fans are really respectful of their private lives.. which always really surprised me..
I’m a huge SK fan, I live just outside of Portland..
They act so casual, and I’m surprised every time I see it… one of them casually walking around before the show.. and not ONE fan jumping up and screaming, i’ve never seen people beg for an autograph.. just incredible.
Tonight while standing out side of the Crystal Ballroom waiting to get into the show, Corin pulls up, not even 5 feet from me.
I squeal excitedly under my breath, absolutely gawking in awe of my proximity to the lovely lady.
However, upon looking around at the other fans waiting in line, at most they are glancing… most trying to look away as to not be rude? or maybe they dont notice?!
Absolutely shocked.. and once she had gone inside the building I start musing about who the man is that was with her.. The two girls in front of me in line inform me that its her husband.. blah blah blah and throw in a bit of trivia about the two.
I ask my boyfriend if we, the portland fans are respectful, or just simply apathetic?
Minutes later, Janet walks by…. up and down the line of fans waiting.. just strolling with these two guys.. she’s also not talking to the fans, as the fans arent talking to her.. I squeal under my breath again, squeeze the boyfriends hand.. and just am awestruck by how casually they walk around.. and how casual we the fans are about it.
Janet walked by a few more times, and finally we were let in.
Quazi opened they seemed talented but truthfully they werent playing to the right audience….. an entirely male band playing to tons of feministic punky kids… yeah.. hmm
Followed by Quazi was a surprise..
Janet.. and some guy… Janets other band i guess..
of course she rocked.. as always.. as if she could do anything OTHER than rock? but he.. he looked like he was mating AND beating up his keyboard at the same time.. very very confusing for me.. the sound quality was just HORRIBLE, tons of horrid staticy screaching… who ever was doing the sound durring that portion should be… educated at the least.
after another loong break ( the elderly man sitting next to us in the balcony got up about 5 times to use the the bathroom or get drinks or whatever.. very irritating)
The boyfriend and i both have headaches.. but finally.. .finally SK gets on stage.
ahhh, instant smiles, instant screaming. and the crowd starts dancing.
After Corin explains that her voice “is shot” I start feeling .. horrible.
I kept wanting to convince everyone to leave so she could go home and drink some tea and get to sleep.. poor poor Corin singing as loud and hard as she could… losing her voice while she did it.. : (
anyway, they mostly played stuff from One Beat, but also played Milkshake ‘n Honey, Words and Guitar, Turn it on, I Wanna be yr Joey Ramone, a cover of Fortunate Son, You’re no Rock ‘n Roll Fun, and even a few more.
The Encore was wonderful, and longer than I’d even hoped for.
Anyway, it was a wonderful show, despite Corin’s suffering (painful sounding!) voice.
And, as much as I like to be very close to the band, it was absolutely awesome sitting up in the balcony, without having to stand on tip toe to see over all the tall people, standing for 4 hours straight, or getting pushed around in a mosh pit. (who would have known that Sleater-Kinney was moshing music?!)
This was the 4th time I’ve seen SK…. its a great show every time.
