a big stadium show minus the arena. located more than a hour by nj transit from nyc. it’s a large pit covered by a disc held up by concrete pillions. surrounded by trees and parking lots. nothing was being allowed into or checked at the venue. umbrellas were trashed and blankets discarded outside. our tickets were scanned by fingers that were laser equipped. we were directed to our seats by yellow, blue and black shirted people. at the merch table the band’s koala t-shirt was selling for $23 as item J.

vedder introduced sleater-kinney as “the greatest three piece band” it was still daylight and sunshine was slanting across the audience. although there werent many seated as they were walking back and forth with their beers. corin asked the crowd if they liked the boss & got boos back. sleater-kinney were energetic and seemed to be have fun despite the sterile environment.

things you say
the end of you
faraway
giraffe
oxygen
new song
stay where you are
step aside
promised land
heart factory
extended jam
dig me not

as the pearl jam set began everyone stood up. there was a lot of head nodding and fist pumping. they performed many of their most popular songs. at one point a beachball landed on stage. eddie said he was really happy but then became depressed because it had a clear channel logo. fans became very excited when he climbed on speakers. but during all this i was thinking. when is sleater-kinney going to come out. there was i alot of lead guitar playing. and extended guitar solos. and eddie spoke about the war and hoping that the troops would be back soon. in response the crowd starting chanting USA USA USA…

the song being over the audience cheered for more. an encore. but it took a really long time. eddie held up something and reflected a stoplight into the audience. slowly scanning back and forth. when they got done there still wasnt any sleater-kinney.

pearl jam came out with corin. together they sang “hunger strike”. which they havent so far on this tour. the rest of sleater-kinney then sang as back up singers on “leaving here”. the girls were all doing zany dances. and enjoying themselves as a chorus. they all participated in “fortunate son”. and eddie asked that the lights be turned on. corin and eddie sang “rockin in the free world” with tambourines. corin was extraordinary. she sang incredibly and moved across the stage to it wings. and reaching out. out across the sky.

S-K warms up in Pennsylvania. I believe this is a shot from soundcheck, and not the actual show. More pictures available from PJ Synergy.

The Southpaw - New York, NY

The Southpaw website has a boatload of pics from this show. By the end of the photos you can see just how hot it is on stage, as everyone’s hair is just wilting from the heat and sweat.

the show last night was phenomenal. possibly the best i’ve seen. and i got my wish–they mixed up the set, even performed a (really good) new new song as well as the other new (tamborine) song. also, “one song for you”, “good things”, “heart factory”, “one more hour”, etc.

and, i don’t know if this has been discussed or if she’s done this at other shows, but carrie was using a green gibson sg instead of the brown one. the brown one was there, but she didn’t pick it up at all. and she was also using an orange amp instead of the vox.

toward the beginning carrie was remarking on the pearl jam fans, saying that she’s been playing a game with herself during every show–she’ll pick out a couple coming in and sitting down with a huge beer and cheesy nachos and after every song she’ll say to herself “they’ll look up next song”, but they never do. so she said she had to get used to not just making eye contact with corin and and janet, and that she’s not afraid to make eye contact with us because we’re not usually eating a hot dog while they’re playing.

it was just a really great show, and i was really happy that they let us distribute flyers and zines from their merch table (which was sparse, with just koala tees and buttons). and to my utter delight, right after “combat rock”, carrie mentioned bands against bush and talked a bit about it, and said that we had zines and flyers at their merch table. after the show i had to rush back to restock, and we passed out over 150 flyers. people were really excited, to take information, which is a nice change of pace. we currently have 45 people on our list, but only 3-5 people are coming to meetings, so hopefully some more s-k fans will give us some help organizing.

i’d definitely put last night’s show in the top 3 of best s-k shows ever. it really was a show for the fans (who yes, definitely, are getting younger and younger all the time - i didn’t see anyone, save the band and southpaw staff, who looked older than me, and i’m 27.) but in any case, all the things candice said were spot-on. well worth sweating through my favorite t-shirt for.

the band looked really excited to be playing for their own fans, as opposed to the nacho-eaters in the huge venues. there was much dancing and smiling and general happiness. plus, they unveiled a brand-new song, called “giraffe.” i got an mp3 of that and the new song they debuted a couple months back, with the tambourine and carrie singing lead.

here’s the set list:

oh
things you say
far away
one song for you
get up
light rail coyote
o2
heart factory
giraffe
sympathy
step aside
new song
one beat
one more hour
words + guitar
end of you

encore:
promised land (with janet stopping the entire song because the harmonica mic was out, then starting again at the middle break - quite amusing, the harmonicanarchy)
good things
combat rock
turn it on

The Southpaw - New York, NY

The sign outside read: Tonight SLEATER-KINNEY. The sign inside read: Maximum Capacity 500. These two things usually are not seen together?especially these days since Sleater-Kinney has played to packed arenas opening for a more mainstream band. But last night, Sleater-Kinney dropped by the tiny venue, South Paw, in Brooklyn, New York to play for their true fans. And boy did we show up. The place erupted when the women took the stage and blasted their opening number, ?Oh,? over the speakers. I think we were all in shock?even Sleater-Kinney looked like they could not believe their surroundings. They played most of the One Beat, some old tunes, a new song, and a Springsteen cover during their encore, which also included ?Good Thing? and ?You?re No RocknRoll Fun.? The sound at South Paw was amazing and Corin?s voice sailed over the audience. Carrie was doing her usual hot thing on stage, kicking and jumping when she was not singing. And Janet played the drums while playing the harmonica for the Springsteen song. Carrie made some funny comments about their current tour in the big arenas and how it?s her goal every night to get that one couple eating cheesy nachos, hot dogs, and drinking their over-sized beers, to look up at least once. ?We?re just the background music to their conversations.? So she apologized for not making any eye contact last night at the beginning of their set because she was used to just looking at Janet and Corin due to the fact that the audiences from the bigger shows are a little scary behind all their food. Suffice to say, no one was eating a hot dog at South Paw. Aside from the fact that it was about a hundred degrees inside the venue and the usual crowd of pushers, shovers, and cutters showed up, it was probably the best show I have ever seen. Sleater-Kinney played over an hour and their encore was how an encore should be?impromptu. The women stood onstage for a few minutes discussing what they thought they should play and Corin shushed the boys in the front shouting their requests, much to the delight of the other people in the crowd. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would get a chance to see Sleater-Kinney in this tiny venue on this tour.
